How to perform the fixed-point calibration service of thermocouples

Thermocouple Calibration Laboratories calibrate the following types of thermocouples: Base Metal Designated Letters (E, J, K, N, T) Non-Letters Designated (W/Re, Ir/Rh, Pt/Rh) Precious Metals (S, R, B) Pure Metals (Au/Pt, Pt/Pd) Calibration services for all common types of thermocouples are provided by NIST in the range of -196°C to +2100°C. The temperature range for a particular calibration depends on the type of wire or thermocouple submitted. Thermocouples can be calibrated by comparison or fixed point, depending on the type of thermocouple, temperature range and desired accuracy. Both methods go back to the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90). The comparison calibration of thermocouple wires uses reference thermocouples maintained at NIST. Fixed-point calibration of thermocouples uses the four defined temperatures of the ITS-90: the freezing points of zinc, aluminum, silver and gold. Single-leg thermocouples were tested against the NIST maintained platinum thermoelectric reference standard Pt-67 by either the first or second method. Only bare wire is required for NIST thermocouple calibration. We hope customers do not send ceramic insulation and protection tubes as they may be damaged during shipping. If the thermocouple is shipped in a mount such as a protective tube assembly, special disassembly charges may apply and the parts will be returned unassembled. The minimum length of thermocouple wire submitted for calibration should be at least: 80 cm for comparison calibration Type, Type J, Type, Type, Type, Type S, Type 70, Type B, 80 cm w/Re 100 cm for Fixed Point Calibration - 100 cm for base metals Thermocouples (E, J, k, N and Types) and thermocouple materials, only unused thermocouples will be tested. Calibration is performed only when the thermocouple is likely to achieve the specified accuracy. How to schedule calibration:
